John Fabian petition, 1783.

The John Fabian petition has been reproduced from the original housed in the South Carolina Archives. Fabian's petition to Governor Benjamin Guerard and the Senate and House of Representatives of South Carolina, dated February 19, 1783, describes his service and injuries during the Siege of Savannah in 1779 and later in 1781 under Col. Harden. Fabian requests financial assistance because he has been crippled in both hands and cannot care for his family. Fabian has several large bills against him from the physician who attended to his injuries in 1781. He asks for an appointment to a line of business so that he may support his family and pay his debts to the surgeon.

John Fabian, native of South Carolina, was a resident of St. Paul's Parish, just north of Charleston, South Carolina. He served under the command of General Lincoln at the Siege of Savannah in 1779. During the siege he was wounded and during his recovery complied with the British government to avoid being imprisoned. Following his recovery he volunteered for service again and was under the command of Colonel William Harden. In August 1781, he was wounded in both arms, leaving his hands crippled....
